GIVE A HOOT FOR OWL HABITATS!!!!

Have you ever read Owl Moon?  Or, even gone owling yourself?  Third graders in Mrs. Thrasher's and Mrs. Riggin's classes spent Friday, November 6th studying about these nocturnal creatures.  Students studied the nesting habits, dining choices, and the appearance of many varieties of owls.  The children were exposed to owl anatomy, played food chain games, created habitat posters and were even able to participate in the dissection of an owl pellet for the grand finale!  Everyone agreed it was a real HOOT!

WHAT'S COOKING IN THE 3RD GRADE???

mmmmmm!  What's that yummy smell?  It may be the aroma of Stone Soup coming from Mrs. Riggin's room.  Yes, Stone Soup.  What is the special ingredient that makes Stone Soup so delicious?  You'll have to ask a 3rd Grader to find out!  The recipe will be tested and devoured on Friday, October 16th.  The students will be reading the folktale, Stone Soup, in class the week of October 12-16th, and will have a guest reader while they enjoy their masterpiece.

In "ant"icipation of a great year in third grade, we kicked off our first month together by studying ant antics! Students participated in many activities such as creating life cycle wheels, learning ant anatomy, studying the importance of colonies, enjoying ant facts and stories, as well as tracking tunneling habits of their very own live anthill in the classroom.  We have enjoyed our six legged friends!

September 25th, our class participated in a day full of "Adventures With Apples". After hearing the story of Johnny Appleseed, boys and girls were later able to make an apple print with an apple cross section, create apple characters, and conduct an Apple Taste Test, where a bar graph was constructed to prove Golden Delicious as class favorite!  In the afternoon, a timeline was created by students which tracked the years Johnny Appleseed journeyed across many states planting his seedlings for settlers to enjoy.

In order to celebrate our knowledge of cells....students have been given a chance to create their own plant cell and receive extra credit for Science in the mean time!  A rubric for this 3 dimensional project was sent home September 25th, projects are due October 5th.  Students should refer to p. A10 in their Science book for details of plant cell make up.

O.R.E.O. (our really exciting online project) took place September 30th.  Students were engaged in predicting, stacking, calculating and tallying Oreo cookies as part of a nation-wide challenge.  Students were able to compete on a class and individual level against other children across the country to find the individual with the greatest average of stackable-snacks!  Check back later to see how we stack up next to other classes!
